An Expert's Top 5 Tips for Getting Ready to Study a Diploma

Posted on June 11 2024

Embarking on a Diploma of Screen & Media Makeup at the Academy of Makeup is an exciting journey that will set the stage for your career in the makeup industry. To help you prepare, we asked our experienced trainers for their top tips. Here are the five most essential pieces of advice to ensure you're ready for success!

1. Get to Know the Campus

Before your first day, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the campus. Investigate your transportation options—whether it’s public transport or parking. Even better, arrange a campus tour before your course starts to meet with a trainer and get a feel for your new environment. This way, you’ll feel more confident and comfortable on your first day.

2. Gather Your Supplies

Make sure you have the necessary equipment to participate in learning effectively. A laptop or tablet is crucial (iPhones can be tricky to navigate the student portal). Head to Officeworks or Kmart to stock up on nice pens, pencils, markers, and a journal or visual art diary for taking notes. Don’t forget post-it notes—they’re handy for quick reminders!

3. Start Building Your Inspiration Library

Set up inspiration folders on your computer for Beauty, SPFX, and Hair. Start gathering pictures you love and put them in the appropriate folders. Additionally, creating a Pinterest page of makeup looks that inspire you will be invaluable for upcoming assessments. This visual library will not only spark creativity but also help you stay organized and focused on your goals.

4. Prepare Your Skin and Budget

As you’ll be practicing makeup daily, it’s important to take care of your skin. Invest in cheap sheet masks (Kmart has great multipack options) to soothe your skin after a day of makeup application. Also, save money by canceling beauty appointments like nails or lash extensions, as they are not recommended during the course. This will keep your skin in top condition and your wallet happy!

5. Network and Gain Experience Early

Don’t be afraid to start assisting established makeup artists as soon as possible. The more experience you gain, the more confident you’ll become. Follow industry leaders on Instagram and reach out to them for opportunities to assist and network. Building these connections early on can open doors to exciting opportunities and valuable industry insights.

Preparing for your Diploma of Makeup at the Academy of Makeup involves more than just showing up on the first day. By following these tips from our trainers, you'll be well-equipped to dive into your studies and make the most of your time at AOM. Get ready to learn, grow, and transform your passion into a thriving career!
